People might think that a criminal defense attorney focuses mainly on drinking and driving offenses. However, many types of crimes need the advocacy of a knowledgeable lawyer. Just some of the crimes a lawyer defends include property crimes, such as theft, burglary or robbery; domestic violence offenses, such as assault, violating an order of protection, stalking or intimidation; violent crimes, such as murder, assault or rape; or drug charges, such as possession, sales, trafficking or distribution.
An attorney is responsible for reviewing police reports, talking to witnesses and seeking professional help in defending his clients. He will try to negotiate reduced or dismissed charges when possible. His skill in negotiation becomes even more important when clients face several different charges, as the defendants do in these cases. He will also advocate for his clients in court by presenting background information that can impact the outcome of the case positively.
