A pair of Pennsylvania men were arrested near a bank in New Jersey and charged with several burglaries, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, being fugitives from justice, possession of illegal ammunition and receiving stolen property.
A local law enforcement officer noticed a suspicious vehicle with the men inside it. He checked the vehicle identification information and found the car had been stolen. The officer also discovered that the men were fugitives from justice and wanted for burglary. The men were detained in jail pending the payment of $50,000 bail per defendant.
In this case, the men have been charged with different types of offenses, including property crimes. They have prior arrest records based on the fact that they were fugitives from justice. A criminal defense attorney works with clients accused of many types of crimes. A lawyer can be even more important for complicated criminal defense cases involving more than one crime or defendants with a criminal history who have possibly absconded from supervision. A court may be more likely to sentence defendants to prison who have a criminal record.
An attorney can work with prosecutors to combine charges and look for ways to reduce any penalties and lessen possible prison sentences. Rather than just possible jail time, community restoration, such as drug counseling or paying restitution for stolen merchandise in theft crimes, can benefit both the defendants and the victims. Attorneys can look for mitigating factors in the case that can also lead to a reduction in sentences.
